  2. USB vs Serial - the Myths

    We borrowed this page from MicroRidge Systems, Inc. who deal in all manner of technical computer peripherals;

    The purpose of this page is to provide a better understanding of USB and serial ports, and to dispel some myths about serial communications and the rumored demise of the serial ports. Let's take a look at a couple of the more common myths that some of our customers believe to be fact.

    Myth #1: Serial Ports are Obsolete?

    Many of the new computers that are shipped today are shipped with multiple USB ports but do not contain RS-232 serial ports. Many people think that since new computers do not have any built-in RS-232 ports, that devices (scales, interfaces, etc.) with RS-232 outputs are obsolete. Since some new computers do not contain a parallel printer port, does that mean printers are obsolete? Neither of these ports (serial or parallel) are obsolete, just the method of connecting these

  3. Registering Weather Display

    You will need install the full working version, wdisplay32.exe, from the CD supplied. Once you have done this save the key file to the root directory / folder of the WeatherDisplay32. By default this is C:/program files/wdisplay. You can do this MS Outlook by right clicking on the attachment, selecting "Save As" and browsing to the correct directory / folder.  When you start WeatherDisplay32 it will find the key.

    Please note that you do not have to enter anything in to the registration option in WeatherDisplay32. It will find all of it's license information from the license key file. Do not try to open the license key file as this may result in the file being renamed or corrupted .

    From there you will need to locate the station, use the correct weather station settings, e.g. WMR928 or WS2300, and configure your units and offsets.

    To make sure you are up to date with the very latest version of WeatherDisplay32 download;

    The software was included on the disk that came with your weather station but later versions / updates can be downloaded from;

    http://www.heavyweather.info/new_english_uk/index.html

    On the above link you need to click on Software Downloads at the top of the page and choose WS2300 from the European models. You are directed to the software page. Click on Heavyweather at the top and view the information and download the software.

  6. WS8610 Additional Sensors

    If you want to add more remote sensors to the WS8610, you must go through the following steps BEFORE putting the batteries in the remotes:
    - Mark the first logger [1]
    - Follow the instructions: Learning a transmitter (channel) to set up the channels you wish to use (say 3)
    - Follow the instructions: Setting the number of transmitters to be saved into the system memory.
    Once this has been done, put the batteries in the second remote sensor and notice that a symbol of concentric arcs of a circle appears again - showing that the sensor is communicating with the logger. At the same time, the logger number [2] will be displayed on the main screen. Mark the logger [2]
    Once this has settled down, repeat this for the third remote sensor, noting the communication symbol and the logger number [3]. Mark the logger [3]
    The unit will then be receiving signals from each of the remotes.

  7. WS2300/2350 PC Connection

    There are a few possibilities when you experience no connection or no download.

    The station is a serial data logger so it need to connect to correct serial port. On conventional PCs this is the 9 pin D connector. Serial is always the preferable connection as it is hardware controlled and not a software device such as USB. However today most consumer PCs and all lap tops come without a serial connection.

    If they are using a USB to serial adapter then they need to have installed the drivers that came with the adapter. This will create a VCP (virtual com port) and again they need to know the port number it creates. The driver software will usually tell them this otherwise they can find it from their Windows Device Manager > Ports.

    Once they do this communication should be OK.

    Very occasionally we hear reports that the station stops receiving data. This is usually because something has affected the data logger, possibly an electrical
